Kiwis Portrush

Portrush Film Theatre

Presents

BEST - ALL BY HIMSELF

Maradona. Pelé. Best. Northern Ireland's legendary star remains one of the most naturally gifted footballers there has ever been. Famously called the 'best player in the world' by Pelé, George Best galvanized Manchester United's five-year recovery from the tragedy of the Munich air crash. His skill and exuberance inspired them to win league titles and the European Cup, even though he was little more than a teenager. Tragically, his career in the upper echelons of sport was over before he turned 29, the result of his bruising battle with alcoholism and the crushing pressure of modern fame. (After all, this was Britain in the frenzy of Beatle-mania and 1960s youth culture, where Best was dubbed 'El Beatle' by the world's media.) Producer John Battsek (2016's Oscar-nominated Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom, The Imposter, Project Nim) and director Daniel Gordon re-team after their acclaimed, Emmy-nominated Hillsborough to deliver a heart-breaking portrait of one of the world's truly great sporting talents, whose extraordinary gift was decimated by his own addiction.

MOONLIGHT

Portrush Film Theatre (Kiwis)

It has become, perhaps, one of the biggest mistakes in Academy Award history, as La La Land was mistakenly called out for the Best Picture instead of the real winner Moonlight. Moonlight charts the life of Chiron across three defining chapters of his life – starting out as a young black man growing up in turbulent Miami, it follows his ongoing struggles with his sexuality and unstable family life. As we follow his life through his teenage years and into manhood – the film becomes a much broader inspection into identity as a whole. Showing how his damaged upbringing with drug-addict mother Paula, and high school tussles shape his road ahead. The New Yorker – “Did I ever imagine, during my anxious, closeted childhood, that I’d live long enough to see a movie like “Moonlight,”

This film has been supported by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland through the Micro-Grant Programme.

Everyone welcome, Portrush Film Theatre. Doors open 7pm

Bushmills Salmon & Whiskey Festival

The Bushmills Salmon & Whiskey Festival was started to celebrate the local culture, heritage and produce. It is a two day event showcasing music, food, the arts and delivering a unique experience for everyone. The concept of the festival was developed by Bushmills Traders Association but has been adopted by the local Council, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. The name came from the world renowned Bushmills Distillery and the salmon which inhabit the River Bush. Bushmills was originally known as Portcaman. In the 1600’s it became a small industrial settlement and important centre for corn and flax, milling, spade, paper and whiskey production. The river one powered seven mills along it’s stretch through the village. The flax mill later generated renewable electricity which powered the Giant’s Causeway tram. Bushmills is the ‘Gateway to the Giant’s Causeway’. The first licence to distil whiskey was granted to the Bushmills Distillery in 1608 and it is now a well-known tourist attraction.

The festival incorporates whiskey tasting and visitors can learn about how it is made. The festival features cookery demonstrations by a celebrity chef and also local chefs with locally sourced produce. Restaurants and eateries in the town have offers promoting locally sourced salmon and/or Bushmills Whiskey as key ingredients. As well as celebrating local salmon and whiskey the festival showcases other local produce including chocolates, cheeses, ice cream, preserves, jams, crafts etc. at the Causeway Coast and Glens Artisan Market on Saturday 17th. This is supported with various artists performing music or dance routines on a stage in the town centre. There are workshops for children with various other activities for them.

EASY RIDER

Two young "hippie" bikers, Wyatt and Billy sell some dope in Southern California, stash their money away in their gas-tank and set off for a trip across America, on their own personal odyssey looking for a way to lead their lives. On the journey they encounter bigotry and hatred from small-town communities who despise and fear their non-conformism. However Wyatt and Billy also discover people attempting 'alternative lifestyles' who are resisting this narrow-mindedness, there is always a question mark over the future survival of these drop-out groups. The gentle hippie community who thank God for 'a place to stand' are living their own unreal dream. The rancher they encounter and his Mexican wife are hard-pushed to make ends meet. Even LSD turns sour when the trip is a bad one. Death comes to seem the only freedom. When they arrive at a diner in a small town, they are insulted by the local rednecks as weirdo degenerates. They are arrested on some minor pretext by the local sheriff and ...

EILISH O'CARROLL stars in LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH!

Wednesday 17th May at 8pm

Riverside Theatre

Eilish is best known as Winnie McGoogan in her brother Brendan’s enormously successful BBC sitcom, ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’,

Best known as Winnie McGoogan in her brother Brendan’s successful BBC sitcom, ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’, Eilish comes into her own here with this reflective look on an eventful life that includes a strict Catholic upbringing, two failed marriages and coming out as a lesbian at the age of 50.

While poignant and deeply moving it is also packed with humour. A 1950s baby, and the ninth of ten children, she describes her childhood with affection and good humour. Then there’s her discovery of orgasmic proportions via the hydraulics on a double decker bus and her discovery of sex! At one stage she was sure that there was something wrong ‘down there’ because her sex life was unfulfilling. Her discovery that she was a lesbian is also tenderly handled with good humour.

The end result is a warm, witty triumph that joyously celebrates being true to yourself.

Tickets £20 from Riverside Box Office.

FRIDAY 21ST AND SATURDAY 22ND APRIL, NIGHTLY AT 8PM

NI's oldest established professional theatre company presents its latest production

Adapted by Zoë Seaton & Shelley Atkinson
Directed by Zoë Seaton
Music by Garth MacConaghie

Based on the book ‘The Faerie Thorn and Other Stories’ by Jane Talbot, The Faerie Thorn will recreate Talbot’s dark, imaginative and bewitching tales, propelling the audience into a world of devilish debts, trysts and trades, broken bargains and unjust trials; of magic, quick-wittedness, hoodwinking and revenge.

The stories inhabit an incredibly vivid and dangerous world controlled by a complex fairy mafia including factions like the memory takers, the time keepers, the bad talkers and trolls, which humans tackle at their peril.

Over the past thirty years, Big Telly has carved a reputation as bold, risk-taking theatre maker, and The Faerie Thorn production will be a vibrant, contemporary, physical theatre, incorporating masks, movement and illusion. The Faerie Thorn will be witty, dark and wickedly comedic dealing with inexorable human tensions in a way that is shocking and yet terrifyingly familiar.

Grainne Duffy is a contemporary blues based artist hailing from Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan.

Described by The Sunday Times as ‘a blues singer of real integrity’, Grainne Duffy is a pioneer of her own style while also paying sincere homage to her roots, soul, blues and rock traditions. She is a seasoned artist and has been spending the last number of years touring in Europe, Scandinavia, Canada and beyond. Some highlights thus far have included 3 performances at Glastonbury Festival, Phuket Festival in Thailand, Notodden Festival, Norway and Dark Season Festival in Svalbard, in the Arctic Circle. This year she has been invited to play some leading international festivals including Tremblant Festival in Canada, Blues du Passions, France and Tanjazz in Morocco. Soon to release her eagerly awaited third album to follow the success of her debut roots album and her second album which weaved together her contemporary influences with her blues and soul roots. Her Live album recorded on tour in Germany, released earlier last year earned her a 9/10 review in Classic Rock sister magazine, The Blues Magazine, quoting ‘This sensational live album confirms Grainne Duffy’s formidable reputation’ , ‘few possess her killer combination of vocal strength, range and intensity, guitar virtuosity and ability to engage audiences’ ‘this is one of the best live CDs of 2015’.

With a voice that is as passionate as it is raw and honest, accompanied by simple, melodic and well phrased guitar lines, this is what you have in Grainne Duffy. Having worked with Nico Bolas (Neil Young, Los Lobos & Keith Richards) , 2016 sees her back in the US recording with producer Justin Stanley (Beck, Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow) . Her new single which was produced by Michael Keeney, producer of Foy Vance, is an acoustic driven roots pop song with a worldly feel. It features the

Far back in the memory of old music lies a tradition fast and rhythmical, the sound of soaring and biting flute and fiddle propped up to a backdrop of relentless, driving percussion and bass. Danceable celebratory and at times mournful and lamenting. Music steeped in the ancient and forgotten folk sounds from hidden corners of Europe and beyond. That sound is Burlap! For many years this music was fostered and kept alive by its visionary and pioneer "Dr Burlap" and now with their spiritual leader and guide proudly carried with them the last remaining keepers and true figure heads of this musical journey have been found - The Sons of Burlap.

Sons of Burlap surfaced in late 2012. Sightings have been rare but future appearances have been rumoured. Few recordings are known and video evidence is mysterious. Do what you can to seek them out dear traveller, to know the Burlap is to truly know a spectacle, unique and timeless in our modern world.
