September

To celebrate Cinema Day at our local community cinema we are showing a triple bill of local film shorts and a firm favourite from the annals of cinema.

Starting at 13.30pm we have three, ten minute shorts expressing the beauty and poetry of the Northern Ireland coast over the years.

Then at 14.00 we have two, twenty five minute black and white films from Laurel and Hardie 'Helpmates' and 'The Music Box'.

At 14.50, we will have a ten minute intermission giving you time to stock up on drinks and snacks while we show some old newsreels of Northern Ireland in the Second World War.

Finally, at 15.00 we have the main event - Casablanca. As stated on our website, this film was made at a time when it was far from clear that Nazi Germany was going to lose the war, when Great Britain stood at the crossroads of uncertainty. Many Americans preferred isolationism to entering such an uncertain war and Michael Curtiz' film was intended as a wake-up call for all those Americans who were 'asleep at the wheel'. Made on a tight budget and released with small expectations, it was one of countless propaganda films that, in this case, amazingly, turned out to have just the right ingredients by sheer happenstance.

.

Everyone welcome, Portrush Film Theatre.

SAVE THE CHIDREN CHARITY ANNOUNCE SPECIAL EVENT

28th September @ The Crannagh

The local branch of Save The Children have announced a unique event to be held at The Crannagh Licensed Restaurant on Thursday 28th September and tickets are now on sale. Aptly entitled “Ready Steady Cook the host for the night will be the lovely Sarah Travers and will feature proprietor of the Crannagh and top chef Barry Dallat attempting to teach local personalities Denis McNeill and Brian Moore to cook - and neither of them cook! The audience will be invited to judge the finished “dishes” and every penny raised goes to the Save The Children charity.

DENIS McNEILL - Q RADIO
I admit to being useless in the kitchen although I do try the odd poached egg and if I make a mistake the next door neighbour’s dog gets it. And come to think of it he does seem to be putting on a lot of weight. I suppose my speciality would be Tomato and Basil Soup and sometimes I even put tomatoes in it.

BRIAN MOORE - NORTH COAST ENTERTAINER
My wife is a wonderful cook so I’m entirely spoilt and indeed, who would want burnt salad anyway. That said, I’m determined to give Denis a run for his money as I don’t rate his skills much after I watched the incompetent way he stirs his tea.

The local committee members who met with Denis and Brian this week couldn’t be more delighted and reckon it’s going to be one of the best events they ever organised. Joy Kearney, Yvonne Orr and Joan McCallum all agreed “After this we think our families will look on our culinary skills with much more respect”.

Tickets for the event which include a light supper courtesy of The Crannagh are priced at £10 and are available from committee members, The Crannagh and the Save The Children Shop in New Row in Coleraine. Further details will follow.

This tour was sold out and pronounced a brilliant event by all who attended.
